Government slashes cost of electric lorries by up to £120,000

6 January 2026

The government has announced a major funding boost to make electric lorries more affordable for UK businesses. The Department for Transport confirmed an additional £18 million for the Plug-in Truck Grant until March 2026. This aims to cut the cost of new electric lorries by up to £120,000. As part of a wider £318 million green freight investment, the funding helps hauliers. It also aids fleet operators to overcome the higher upfront costs of electric vehicles. As a result, businesses can access significant savings. They benefit from lower day-to-day running costs compared to diesel lorries.

Grant Levels by Vehicle Size

  • Smaller trucks (4.25t–12t) can save up to £20,000
  • Mid-sized trucks (12t–18t) up to £60,000
  • Larger trucks (18t–26t) up to £80,000
  • The largest lorries (26t and over) up to £120,000

Certainty for a Zero-Emission Future

Alongside the funding increase, the government will launch a consultation on a roadmap to phase out sales of new non-zero emission HGVs by 2040. This step aims to give industry the certainty it needs to invest. This also helps them plan and transition with confidence. Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation, Keir Mather, said, “We’re backing British businesses to go green by making electric lorries more affordable, helping hauliers to make the switch whilst turbocharging growth, investment and jobs in the sector.” Together, the funding and consultation signal a clear commitment. They support businesses as the freight sector moves towards zero-emission technology.
